Earlier this year, I had the privilege of being featured in Rule Breakers, an inspiring film directed by Oscar-winner Bill Guttentag.
The movie tells the story of the Afghan Dreamers, Afghanistan's first all-girls robotics team, and the visionary woman who dared to teach them in a nation where educating girls is seen as rebellion.
Personal Notes
My involvement was small—I had an acting role as a referee—but being part of a film that celebrates women in STEM and prioritizes girls' education everywhere felt meaningful.
The film premiered at the Linwood Dunn Theater in February 2025 and was released nationally in March. It stars Ali Fazal and Nikohl Boosheri, and critics have praised it as an inspiring, heartwarming story about determination, teamwork, and gender equality.
This project aligned with so much of what I care about. I've spent years supporting robotics education through FIRST, watching students build robots and build confidence.
Rule Breakers captures that same spirit, but in a context where the stakes and the courage required are even greater. Watching a group of young women in Afghanistan take up robotics despite the barriers they face is a reminder of what's possible when we show up for education and opportunity.
